New racing venue
A new class of motorracing will make its public debut in a disused gravel-pit south-west of Christchurch tomorrow. VW-inspired tube racers, Baja Bugs, dune buggies and three-wheeled “trikes” will race around a fast circuit in the new Pound Road Speedbowl. The unusual cars will race in groups of four around a track at the bottom of the pit, and waterholes and “yumps” should make the racing interesting for spectators. Russell By-
field, of Christchurch, is expected to be the top driver in his beach buggy powered by an 1835 cu cm VW motor. Two other Christchurch drivers, Clyde Rumers (VW tube-racer) and Kevin Hampton (V 4 tube-racer), are also expected to show out among the 30-odd competitors. The speedbowl is the brainchild of Trident Promotions, which runs Ruapuna Raceway during the summer.
