Ambition and change
Ambitious Women. By Barbara Ellen Wilson. The Women’s Press, 1983. 228 pp. $11.50. Is a women’s refuge more important than personal freedom? What about a revolutionary’s safety? This story concerns three urban feminists, their motivations, integrity and choices when confronted by such a situation. The contemporary American setting may be larger and its possibilities of action more extreme than New Zealand’s, but there is a familiar feel to the lives and concerns of these characters. Each wants change, each in her own way follows a personal compulsion to the kind of change she envisages. The writer’s open, convincing style shares the caring, pains and fun of relationships as well as some important conflicts, not least the distinction between different kinds of ambition.— Heather McPherson.
