Conservation

Sir,—Perhaps with less party politics and rivalry, all those “in control” would confer objectively with every source of information and evidence, and make moves for the true good of the country. Do they not take into account even yet the vital connection between varied-species forests and the entire oxygen supply; that it takes a large forest 24 hours to replace the oxygen burnt up by one jet plane taking off; that water-cycle, soil and air are closely connected with the presence of trees and their natural undergrowth? It is absolutely horrifying to look at maps comparing the amount of natural, deep-rooted, thriving forest in New Zealand in earlier times, even in 1800, with that of today. And in the future? There are obviously a fewsimple, very basic, vital issues at stake in the world today — and no amount of politicking and techno-logical-type arguing will alter the facts as to what mankind (by referring to the natural laws) must do about them.—Yours, etc., N. W. MILANOVICH. July 5, 1983.
