‘Power now, pay later’

Sir,—Your editorial (July 7) commenting on the financial methods used to run the M.E.D. is timely. So far every effort to get the Government to cheapen electricity to the domestic consumer in. Christchurch during the winter smog season has failed. There is always a vague comment about the matter being in our own hands, presumably because of the way the M.E.D. finances its capital works. The M.E.D. seems to always have a surplus of funds at the end of each year. If these surplus M.E.D. funds were used to give a discount on bills incurred by domestic users during the 12-week smog season, the smoke pall would show a marked reduction. Hopefully in 20 years time homes will be better insulated and more use will be made of the sun and heatpumps, so electricity consumption for home heating should reduce, to enable loans to be paid back without hardship by the consumers of the 21st century.—Yours, etc., PATRICK NEARY.
