Police chief’s home raided

PA Wellington The home of the Commissioner of Police, Mr R. J. Walton, was ransacked by thieves last evening. But they were compelled to flee leaving a pile of goods behind when they tripped a burglar alarm set up by Mr Walton when he goes away. The commissioner was in Greymouth yesterday and his wife is overseas.

Porirua police said that the break-in at the Linden house happened some time after 7 p.m. “It appears they were gathering up a large quantity of property when they realised they had activated the alarm and they ran out of the house,” said Detective Sergeant Lloyd Reeve. The police were at the house within minutes, but by the time they had arrived the thieves had disappeared. The thieves

broke in by forcing a door. Mr Reeve said that the house had not been seriously damaged, but there had been an “untidy search.” It was not known whether anything had been taken. The police were waiting for Mr Walton to return to Wellington today.
