Canterbury Coast Guard kept busy

Members of the Canterbury Volunteer Coast Guard Service attended more than 50 incidents from Labour Day weekend to the end of the first week of April, says the service’s annual report. The service’s president, Mr Harold Mason, said in the report that 19 vessels needed assistance after striking adverse weather and sea conditions. Seventeen boat owners needed help after their engines failed, five had equipment failure, and only one ran out of fuel. Two incidents involved transporting injured people to Lyttelton for transfer to St John ambulance. Safety in the area covered by the service had increased dramatically, Mr Mason said. This was because of the service’s excellent facilities, which included the operations and radio room, and the “first class” performance of the Mount Herbert V.H.F. repeater. Among the equipment bought last season was a portable V.H.F. set, while a second telephone was installed in the service’s headquarters at Fisherman’s Wharf, Lyttelton. The coast guard has vessels available throughout the year to help boat owners in distress, but extra vessels are on standby during the peak boating season from the end of October to April. This year the service had extra vessels on duty until near the end of May. ARRIVALS Saturday ACT 2 (9.50 a.m.), 24,821, Auckland (Blueport). Toyo Fuji No. 8 (4.23 p.m.), 9000, Melbourne (S.C.N.Z.).
