‘Giant killer’ cost over $3M

Shareef Dancer proved one of the giant killers of the racing year in the Northern Hemisphere when he beat the French Derby winner, Caerleon, and the English Derby winner, Teenoso, into the minor places in the Irish Sweeps Derby Shareef Dancer is another son of the spectacular sire, Northern Dancer. His dam Sweet Alliance (by Sir Ivor) won the Kentucky Oaks.
He is trained by Michael Stoute and was ridden by Walter Swinburn. Shareef Dancer cost his owner, Maktoum Al Maktoum, $3,300,000 as a yearling. He earned £133,675 (about $NZ310,000) in winning the Irish Sweeps Derby. The Irish Sweeps Derby was his third start for the season, but he claimed some attention for the classic after winning in style over the Derby distance at Royal Ascot on June 16.
