Rugby Deserved win for Leeston
A superior team effort gave Leeston a 9-7 win against Southbridge in the Ellesmere senior rugby competition on Saturday. As well as gaining its share of possession, Leeston received an extra bonus by winning seven tight-heads. Impressive forwards for Leeston were Graham Clayton, Andrew Lambie and Robbie Dawson. The full-back, Mark Chamberlain, and the second fiveeighths, Stuart Boon, had excellent games.
Southbridge did not give the same all-round team effort against its opponent and was let down by the rear division which, considering the experience available, performed inadequately on the day. A loose forward, Mike Jones, and a prop, Bill Maw, were the pick of the Southbridge team.
Scores:— Leeston 9 (Boon three penalty goals) beat Southbridge 7 (Win Partridge try; Neville Carter penalty goal).
The vagaries of the wind affected the match at Lincoln Domain between the home team and Kirwee. Without its captain and Canterbury flanker, Don Hayes, Kirwee was dominated by a superior Lincoln pack and a back-line which used the wind to better advantage. Lincoln won, 19-0. Playing into the wind, Kirwee started the game in grand style, but seemed to become overconfident in the back-line. For Kirwee, the
half-back, Jimmy Reardon, and the second five-eighths, John Catherwood, had outstanding games. Gavin Henderson, John Denton and the flankers, Tom Brankin and Wayne McClintock, had solid games in the forwards. Lincoln’s best efforts came from the full-back, Greg Jones, his brother, Kieran, at centre, and a wing, Keith Shadbolt. Prominent in the pack were the captain, Eddie Kerr, a flanker, John Mounce, and the No. 8, Phil Kortegast.
Scores:— Lincoln 19 (G. Jones, K. Jones, K. Shadbolt tries; G. Jones two conversions, penalty goal).
The other senior matches resulted: Sheffield 26, Burnham 3; Peninsula 12, Darfield 4. Lower-grade scores were:— Senior B.— United 21, Dunsandel 20; Diamond Harbour 3, Prebbleton 0; West Melton 7. Lincoln 6; Irwell 56, Springston 0.
Senior reserve.— Section I: Leeston 33, Peninsula 0; Prebbleton 38, Selwyn 13; Sheffield 22, Darfield 10. Section II: Southbridge 26, Kirwee 3.
Under-21.— Prebbleton 39, West Melton 9; Dunsandel 42, Southbridge 0; Waihora 15, Darfield 12; Burnham 28, Lincoln 3. Under-18.— Prebbleton 32, Diamond Harbour 12; Darfield 35, West Melton 0; Springston beat Leeston-Irwell by default.
