Golf Manukau beats Nelson
PA Auckland A strong finish on its home course enabled Manukau to retain the national club golf championship for the Kelliher Trophy against the Greenacres club, of Nelson, on Saturday. Manukau won the contest, HVz to Manukau was well placed after taking the morning foursomes, iVz to Vz, but after the first nine holes of the singles, the match had become much tighter. However, Manukau’s greater steadiness towards the end and its knowledge of the course allowed it to take the singles, 7-3.
The Greenacres No. 1, Stephen Street, had a notable and convincing win against the New Zealand representative, Michael Barltrop, 3 and 2. The closest match was between Greenacres’ Kevin Downie, a veteran of 19 Freyberg Rose Bowl tournaments, and Ross Burney. It ended at the eight-
eenth in Burney’s favour. Manukau’s next defence will be against Ngamotu (New Plymouth) on August 6. Results (Manukau names first) were:— Foursomes.—S. Doidge and P. Burney halved with D. Burney halved with D. Chisnall and F. Ladds; R. Burney and P. Harnish beat R. Stuart and B. Young, 7 and 5; P. Shadlock and P. K. Cleland beat K. R. Downie and D. L. Beggs, 3 and 1; M. Leitch and C. Burney beat P. Dillon and W. Hodgson, 4 and 3; M. E. Barltrop and P. Potter beat S. W. Street and P. Fox, 4 and 3.
