Unions picket container ship
PA Wellington About 20 maritime unionists picketed the Germanowned container vessel Columbus New Zealand in Wellington yesterday in an appeal for increased New Zealand manning on foreign ships. In Auckland 20 unionists
marched on the offices of the Columbus line. The delegation delivered a letter from the Seamen’s, and Cooks and Stewards unions, urging the company to ask its German head office to put New Zealand crewmen on ships carrying New Zealand produce overseas. The Columbus New Zea-
land is owned by Columbus Maritime Services and trades between New Zealand and the east coast of the United States. The Auckland branch secretary of the Seamen’s Union, Mr Wally Vale, said the Columbus line was singled out because it exported meat in competition with the Shipping Corporation’s vessel, NZ Caribbean.
