July 28 likely Budget date
Parliamentary reporter Beehive staff are hedging their bets around a July 28 Budget date. The statutory 14 days notice that must be given before the House can sit makes the Budget impossible before July 21. The Budget date of August 5 last year was considered late, and was pushed back by difficulties over tax cuts after protracted talks on a wage-tax trade-off failed. Given that the Budget is
traditionally delivered on a Thursday, July 21, 28 and August 4 are the likely dates this year. The Treasury is believed to be working towards a Budget date of July 21 in the preparation of its reports and usually the Budget is slightly later than their .date. This puts the probable date at July 28. The Minister of Finance, Mr Muldoon, has said he might make the Budget date public this week.
