Casinos, Sunday trading condemned
PA Wellington The call by the Minister of Tourism, Mr Talbot, for casinos, the serving of alcohol on domestic flights, and Sunday trading has been criticised by the coconveners of the joint Methodist - Presbyterian
Public Questions Committee, Mrs Beatrice Mclver and Mr John Marshall. “We see no evidence that these things would result in an increase in tourism, but more importantly we feel they would be contrary to the moral and physical health of our society," they
said. “The introduction of casinos would bring a new style of gambling which New Zealand is better off without. “We see no benefit in promoting the consumption of alcohol on domestic
flights. The Minister should be taking a responsible attitude towards encouraging moderation, not promoting the consumption of alcohol.” The committee was also opposed to the further commercialising of Sunday with the introduction of trading, they said.
