Eros moving
Eros, London’s famous landmark at the centre of Piccadilly Circus, is to be moved 39ft at a cost of more than $500,000 by the Greater London Council as part of a major redevelopment scheme. The council intends to move the statue, officially called the Shaftesbury Memorial, plus 14 street lighting columns, 16 traffic signals, bronze railings and lanterns, all
listed, to improve traffic flow and create a pedestrian piazza. Eros will be taken down early next year and will undergo extensive conservation work. In addition, redeveloping the nearby London Pavilion, and Swan and Edgar buildings and the Trocadero and the Monico sites will cost an estimated $2OO million.
