Nuclear radiation

Sir,—Mr Hugh Atkinson presents some poorly reasoned arguments in his comments (“The Press,” June 24), but two points cannot be disputed. He suggests that Dr Ber--tell is “talking rubbish in some areas.” True, except that Dr Bertell’s “rubbish” is the pollution and radioactive material which Mr Atkinson seems so unconcerned about. Again, Mr Atkinson says that “New Zealand scientists are not concerned about conditions in the Pacific Islands arising from nuclear testing causing major health problems.” Dr Bertell would agree. It is a little unfortunate however, or has Mr Atkinson forgotten, that New Zealand is also a Pacific island? If we allow such complacency to continue for much longer there will be no clean water left for Mr Atkinson’s contaminated fish to cleanse itself in.—Yours, etc., CHRISTOPHER J. KING. June 24, 1983.
