A.I.D.S. toll now 1641
NZPA-Reuter New York A.I.D.S. the disease which destroys the body’s defence against infections, has attacked at least 1641 people and killed 644 of them since it was identified two years ago, reported “Time” magazine yesterday. It said that since 1981, doctors had reported an average of 165 new cases a month of A.1.D.5., or Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. New York City has reported 732 cases and 284 deaths, followed in incidence by San Francisco and Los Angeles. Seventeen other countries had reported 122 cases, reports “Time.” It said that the Health Department
would this year spend SUSI 4 million on’ research for a cure, and wanted SUSI2 million more. It has set up a special A.I.D.S. task force at the Atlanta Centres for Disease Control (C.D.C.). According to "Time,” epidemiologists say that 75.9 per cent of the reported cases in the United States are active homosexual men, while 16 per cent are intravenous drug users, 5 per cent are Haitian immigrants, and 1 per cent have haemophilia. "Time” quoted a C.D.C. director. W’illiam Foege, as saying: “The average A.I.D.S. victim has had 60 different sexual partners in the last 12 months."
