No rate rise for Mt Herbert

Ratepayers in Mount Herbert County will this year probably receive rate demands similar to last year. The Mount Herbert County Council yesterday gave notice that it intended to charge a general rate of 0.46852 c in the dollar on the capital value of rateable property. This is the same as last year. The council plans to spend slightly more than $371,000 in its 1983-84 financial year. Income is estimated at almost $372,000. Much of the money will go towards work on roads, streets, and bridges. It is estimated that more than $228,000 will be spent on

subsidised road works, while $27,700 will be used for road works for which a subsidy is not available. More than $191,600 of the council’s income is expected to come from rates, and revenue should also be boosted by a National Roads Board subsidy of more than $121,800. Income will also come from other sources such as licensing fees and petroleum tax. Cr S. M. Murray voted against the notice of intention to strike the rates, saying he thought too much money had been allocated towards reading works. The rates will be struck at the next meeting of the council on July 25.
