Giant barge under tow
Four tugs are towing a 10,600-ton offshore supply barge through the Kiel Canal and across the Baltic to Leningrad. The barge had to be split into three so it couldd fit through the canal and other narrow waterways it had to manoeuvre. However, according to Hapag-Lloyd, which supplied the tugs, the operation has so far been a brilliant success. The barge was split into three sections 163 m long and 15m wide. Each section was taken through the Kiel Canal separately. Hapag-Lloyd says each section of the barge, which in total was about the same size as an international football field, had to be carefully looked after. The slightest dent would have made it impossible to weld the three sections together. ARRIVALS Coastal Trader (8 a.m.), 6736, Auckland (S.C.N.Z.). lyun Koran (8.30 a.m.), 2327, sea (Scales).
