Duty now levied on tourists’ imports to Fiji
Travellers purchasing duty-free goods in New Zealand before flying to Fiji can now expect to pay 10 per cent duty to Fiji Customs officers. This controversial decision, aimed at protecting Fiji’s own duty-free traders, came into effect this month. An increasing number of Australian visitors to Fiji have apparently found the duty-free bargains in Sydney too good to miss and have been arriving at Nandi with their video recorders, cameras and stereo gear tucked under their arms. Fiji Customs have no facilities for holding goods in bond and, in a surprise move, announced that duty would in future be levied on such imported goods. The decision has stunned some sections of the tourist industry which fears that Australians in particular will not take kindly to what is seen clearly as a protectionist move. Passengers in transit through Nandi airport will not be affected.
