Mick Dittman wins trotting race

NZPA Sydney The champion Queensland jockey, Mick Dittman, carrying the colours he wore when he won last year’s Melbourne Cup on Gunner’s Lane, won an invitation celebrity drivers’ race at Harold Park Raceway on Friday evening. '■ Having only his second drive behind a pacer, Dittman showed great horsemanship in urging Gildoro to a IVz metre win over Sir Twinkle, driven by the Sydney “Daily Telegraph” trotting writer, Bill Ellis. Captaiin Marvel, handled by Gerald Shinn, was a head away third.

Dittman is negotiating with Sydney’s leading trainer, Tommy Smith, to become his stable rider and it appears likely that he will accept the position from August 1. The brilliant Jayare’s Dream, burdened by a buckled wheel for almost the entire one mile journey of the $40,000 New South Wales Sires’ Stakes yet was able to win in the second fastest time ever run for that distance at Harold Park. Jayare’s Dream ran the distance in 2min 0.9 s — only five tenths of a second outside Nicotine Prince’s course record for two-year-olds.
