Shuttle break
NZPA-Reuter Los Angeles A wheel brake broke on the space shuttle Challenger, possibly causing some wheel dragging, when the craft landed at a California air base on Saturday after its six-day mission. Ground staff said that pieces of the four brakes aboard the spacecraft had been found after the Challenger landed, but it appeared that they had been dislodged when the shuttle was on the ground.
The shuttle Columbia also had trouble with a brake’s dragging when it made a brake test during a landing in November. The shuttle ground control team leader, James Harrington, said that all four of the Challenger’s brakes would be sent to the manufacturers for inspection. At least 25 heat-resistant tiles, which helped shield the 95-tonne spacecraft against searing heat as it returned to Earth, were also badly chipped.
