General forecast: An active cold front is expected to lie over the northern South Island in the morning and move over the North Island in the afternoon. It is preceded by a strong northerly flow and a band of rain, but falls east of the main ranges should be only scattered and light. A cold westerly flow follows the front, with clearing skies in eastern districts and scattered showers in the west. There should be some hail and thunder in the west of the South Island.
