Autumn and spring checks
Careful roof maintenance involves inspections at least twice a year — in the autumn and spring. Guttering and valleys need to be cleared of leaves in the autumn, anyway, so that it is the obvious time to check out the condition of the roof. The north side of a sloping roof absorbs the full force of the sun’s rays, so tends to deteriorate more
quickly. Watch out particularly for broken seals at the edges of flashings, such as those around chimneys. Since leaks mostly run towards the eaves, use a knife to check the boards along the eaves, testing for rot. Damage of this land can often be scraped out, and the hole filled with a caulking compound.
