Canty Country team announced
By
KAY FORRESTER
Experience and youth are both represented in the Canterbury Country netball team named at the weekend for the national tournament at Gisborne in August. The coach, Ethna Rouse, has included four previous team members in her lineup. Carolyn Dalzell (Hurunui), Maxine Loffhagen and Sue Graham (North Canterbury), and Annette Blomquist (Banks Pen-
insula) have all had experience playing at national tournament level. Blomquist has also been a member of under-age New Zealand sides and will prove an asset in the Country defence. With considerable experience for a young player she could well emulate her sister, Maxine Munro, and play for the New Zealand side. Graham will provide capable support in the defence, where she will be joined by Robyn Ede (Ellesmere), a
young player making the step up from last year’s under-20 team. The absence of Rosemary Oliver, who would have been in the team but for a back injury, means there are only three specialist defenders. Dalzell, who can play in any position, will more then likely be used in the defence if needed. Loffhagen will lead the attack with two young shooters, Leanne Peter (North Canterbury) and Deanna Cooper (El-
lersmere), moving up from the under-20s. Lincoln’s Cat fay Munro will share the centre court with Dalzell and Rosalie Doyle (also Lincoln). Doyle is an energetic centre and if her play at the South Island Squad Tournament is an indication will provide her shooters with plenty of ball. Three non-travelling reserves, including two of last year’s team, have been named: Karen Palmer (Ellesmere), Barbara Hub-
bard (Lincoln), and Adrienne Fox (North Canterbury). Canterbury Country, drawn from Canterbury’s seven sub-associations, finished in the bottom half of the first grade at last year’s national tournament. It was Country’s third year in senior since being promoted from second grade, and the side will be looking to improve its placing at August’s national tournament to prevent any danger of relegation.
