First win to Teachers B

Teachers B had its first win in the first round of the second section of play in the Canterbury n Sp° rts Depot senior netball competition on Saturday. The college side snatched a one-goal win in the senior B section over a Technical side whose form has slipped since its strong beginning to the season. Other matches in senior B saw South Brighton score a last-minute win over Burnside B and Teachers A account for Burnside C. In senior A Sacred Heart A had a win over its B team Unlucky to lose, the B side led for all but the last minute of the match. Burnside looked impressive in trouncing Hagley 48-15. St Nicholas shook off a first-half deficit to win comfortably against Riccarton, 4531. Riccarton did not go down without a fight and Diana Nelis’s accuracy earned her the Canterbury Sports Depot player of the day award. Sacred Heart A 27, Sacred Heart B 23 As in the first round Sacred Heart A made hard work of what should have been an easy win. A reluctance to shoot on the part of both A shooters, Diana Sullivan and Donna Smith, saw the side trailing until well into the first half. The B players lifted their game for this match and were unlucky to lose. Two goals ahead at half-time, the side began the second half with another goal. Excellent work by all the B players, led by Ann Bowen in the centre and Eileen Honey at goal shoot, prevented Sacred Heart A from levelling the scores until only two minutes before full time. A change of positions for the A shooters in the second half made little

difference, as both were still unwilling to shoot. The A team looked unimpressive and its play was punctuated with errors, many of them unforced, while the B side had one of its better matches. Sandra Heffernan and Jennifer Readman in the A defence were penalised for mistimed interception attempts and obstruction, and were lucky not to give away more penalties. Helen Ibbotsen and Margaret Smith in the mid-court for the B team had excellent matches. Sacred Heart A must count this as one of its luckiest wins. It was ahead only twice in the match. The umpires were Annette Orangi and June Woodham. Burnside 48, Hagley 15 Burnside, after its first section win last week, looked strong and outplayed a Hagley side that could not find the form of two weeks ago when it upset Technical. The absence of Tracey Simonsen meant that Sharon Young moved out of the Hagley circle to goal attack. The limited shooting opportunities for the side meant that the change mattered little. Ahead 24-8 at half-time, Burnside extended that lead in the second half. Hagley’s defence, Catherine de Ruiter and Jan Edlin, had little answer to the height of Burnside’s Jan Pickering. The latter shot well, ably supported by Geane Hohipuha, but did not make the most of all her chances. Linda Parnham, the Hagley centre, led by example with a very active game. She took several passes in moves down the court and anticipated well to make several interceptions.

For Burnside, Dianne Brown and Carey Patten played their usual sound games in the midcourt. The umpires were Allison Elder and Jan Hefford. St Nicholas 45, Riccarton 31 In a closely fought first half, Riccarton had the edge to take a two-goal lead at half-time. Diana Nelis shot accurately to give her side the advantage. She was provided with plenty of possession by the centrecourt players, Lynne Rowe and Adrienne Williamson. Rowe had an absorbing battle in the centre with the St Nicholas captain, Lynne McLennan. Honours were shared between the two, McLennan making a number of interceptions. The match was a high-scor-ing one, 38 goals in the first half and 38 in the second. St Nicholas’ Anne Davidson had a mixed game, finding her confidence in the second half to shoot her team to victory. It was well into the half before St Nicholas was able to take control. A burst of concentrated play saw the side score several successive goals to take a five-goal lead. Riccarton maintained pressure but could not stop St Nicholas scoring. Barbara Kreft and Averill Aymes, who had a quiet game in the St Nicholas defence in the first half, lifted their game after half-time to stop many of Riccarton’s moves. The umpires were Patsy Tainui and Trudy Eden. Teachers A 29, Burnside C 16 Teachers proved too strong for the senior reserve side from Burnside. In a match marked by stoppages and scrappy play, the college side took a 21-8 lead at half-time. Both sides scored only eight goals in the second half and so it was the first-half advantage

that gave Teachers the victory. Robin Davenport and Jane z Watson in the Teachers defence unsettled the Burnside shooters early in the match. With their confidence shaken, the shooters became reluctant to shoot. Several mid-court interceptions by Teachers’ Nicky Power and Sue Everest gave the college side extra possession which its shooters turned into goals. The Burnside defence of Glenda Tainui, Wendy Burrows, and Jo Howie worked hard throughout the match and managed to pressure the college shooters in the second half. Both sides missed many shots at goal during the match. The umpires were Jan McClung and Alva Morgan. South Brighton 30, Burnside B 29 Burnside B, the top team from senior reserve, began very strongly and South Brighton trailed for most of the match. Down by seven goals at half-time, South Brighton left its run until well into the second half. Karen Baker, in her second game of the day, played a sensible game in the centre for Burnside. She outplayed her partner, Deane Stringer, in the first half. Stringer lifted her game in the second half and her team mates followed suit. The shooters, Raylene Maxwell and Kaye Patrick, had far more opportunities in this half and netted a good percentage. South Brighton tied the scores at 22-all and took the lead at 23-22. With the scores level at 25-all an injury to a Burnside player stopped the match. Bumside scored the first goal when play restarted but the next four goals were South Brighton’s.

Although Burnside pulled back three of these goals South Brighton was rewarded for its determined fight-back by a one-goal lead at the end of injury time. The umpires were Annette Orangi and Rosemary Brown. Teachers B 24, Technical 23 Teachers and Technical fought out a close first half, each side cancelling out the other’s play to reach half-time at 10-all. Both sides played lack-lustre netball. Play was hesitant, players of both teams making elementary errors. The goal shooters, Toese Stewart (Teachers) and Joyce Rueben (Technical), had mixed days, each shooting some good goals and missing some easy shots. Play in the second half began in Technical’s favour and it took a two-goal lead. Technical’s combination of Gay Johns and Phillippa Bakermans tightened up their defence to pressure Teachers’ shooters. The latter, encouraged by supporters, lifted their games to level the scores and go ahead. Technical pulled back one goal and play seesawed from goal to goal. Determined play by Kaye Harding and Sue Lowe gave Teachers the advantage at full time. The umpires were June Woodham and Sue Hawkins. Points: Senior A: Burnside A, Sacred Heart A, St Nicholas, 2; Sacred Heart B, Hagley, Riccarton 0. Senior B: Teachers A, Teachers B, South Brighton, 2; Burnside B, Burnside C, Technical, 0.
