Rent freeze

Sir,—There are a great many glaring anomalies in the rent freeze regulations which Mr Friedlander, the Minister of Housing, said would be corrected. Allowances will only be available in cases of severe hardship. This does not apparently cover the situation where a landlord, by the mere nature of a lease, usually on commercial or industrial property, has had his rentals frozen since 1978-79 or 1980. Surely this is wrong? Landlords might well demand that prices and wages drop back to 1978-79 or 1980 levels, because at present they are paying June 1982 prices and wages to maintain their properties. Furthermore, interest rates on their mortgages have doubled. Many landlords and tenants have agreed to new rentals renewed during the freeze. Surely now they should become effective. After all, tenants have had the benefit of 12 months and landlords now have to wait for the next review, that may be two or three years away.—Yours, etc., P. M. ALEXANDER. June 14, 1983.
