Hastings trainer off to Brisbane

Special correspondent Hastings The Hastings trainer, Patrick Campbell, flew out of New Zealand for Brisbane yesterday to be reunited with his good galloper, Claymore Boy. Campbell sent Claymore Boy to Brisbane at the start of the month, in the care of the Woodville trainer, Bruce Marsh.

The Blarney Kiss gelding made his Australian debut on Monday and Marsh telephoned Campbell at Hastings on Tuesday to say the horse turned in a top effort. Claymore Boy was a fast finishing third in a $20,000 1600 m race at Eagle Farm. He was ridden by the New Zealand jockey, Garry Phillips, and was a little unlucky not to win, flashing home after being carted back a few places on the

home turn. “Bruce said it was a real top run,” said Campbell.

The race was run on a surprisingly good track and the winner ran the 1600 m in smart time.

Marsh also started one of his own horses, Guinness, at the meeting and the four-year-old finished a close fourth over 1200 m. He was just beaten out of third place and finished within a length of the winner. Garry Phillips also rode him. Marsh’s other two horses, Shamrock and Find Out, did not race on Monday but are likely to step out before long. Claymore Boy will start next in a $13,000 2020 m open handicap race at Doomben this Saturday and after that he will be aimed for the Tatt’s Cup on June 25 and Doomben Cup on July 9.
