German cellist

A distinguished trio for both teaching and performances will be established in the School of Music at the University of Canterbury this week when the newlyappointed German cellist, Walter Godde, joins Carl Pini (violin) and MaUrice Till (piano). , Walter Godde’s appointment as a lecturer in cello, until the end of 1985, has been made possible by anonymous donors.

No time will be wasted in introducing Mr Gqdde to Christchurch music lovers. His introductory recital will be on Monday, June 20, in the James Hay Theatre with Messrs Till and Pini. Walter Godde has won a

considerable reputation as teacher, soloist and ensemble player. He began to study the cello at the age of six, first at the Music Conservatory, Duisburg, and later at Essen. After a period with Professor Maria Kleige, he became a pupil of Janos Starker, first in Germany and later at the University of Indiana.

He became an assistant to Professor Starker in 1979 and last year was appointed a member of the teaching staff at Indiana. As a teacher he has received high praise from several of the world’s leading cellists and has been a prize-winner in several international competitions.
