Bekaa tank-fire denied
NZPA-Reuter Beirut Israeli and Syrian forces traded shell-fire for an hour yesterday morning across their front-line in eastern Lebanon, local radio stations report. But an Israeli military spokesman outside Beirut denied that there was any fighting between the two armies, which have been entrenched among the rich farmlands of the Bekaa Valley for almost a year.
The State-run Beirut radio said that the exchange of tank-fire took place near the village of Hosh AlHarimi, about 15km from the Syrian border. There were no reports of casualties. The Right-wing Falangist radio said that its correspondent in the area counted 30 shells during the exchange, which it said was lit by flares apparently fired bv both sides.
The Lebanese news media has reported sporadic exchanges of fire betwen the Israelis and Syrians recently, but they have been denied by Israeli spokesmen and generally ignored by Syria. Tension in the Bekaa relaxed this month after an upsurge in May after the signing by the Lebanese Government of a troop withdrawal accord with Israel which has been rejected by Syria.
