Mafia-fighter dies in fusillade

NZPA Palermo Presumed Mafia gunmen yesterday shot dead a top anti-crime official of the Carabinieri and two other members of the paramilitary police force.

The police said that Captain Mario d’Aleo and two other officers had been in Monreale, on the outskirts of the Sicilian capital,

Palermo, when they were attacked outside Captain d’Aleo’s home.

They said that one of the policemen was at the wheel of the blue police car, the other was guarding the doorway of the house, and Captain d’Aleo was just stepping out of his blue police car when three cars — a Fiat 127, a Fiat 131,

and an Opel — surrounded them.

Several gunmen in the cars had opened fire and killed them, apparently before they had time to react.

Two cars believed to have been at the shooting were found abandoned minutes later by the police. Both of them had been set on fire

— a trademark of the Mafia.

The police said that Captain d’Aleo, who was 29, was commander of the Monreale Carabinieri and was a specialist in anti-Mafia investigations. Captain d’Aleo’s predecessor, Captain Emanuele Basile, was killed by presumed Mafia gunmen on May 4, 1980.
