Sea beats rower
NZPA Brisbane The lone trans-Pacific rower, Peter Bird, was yesterday forcCd to give up his attempt to cross the Great Barrier Reef.
A Royal Australian Navy spokesman said the patrol boat H.M.A.S. Bendigo took Bird off his 10.6 m boat HelO-on-Britannia as it was being swept by heavy seas towards the reef.
Mr Bird, a Londoner,
radioed for help when his boat was only one nautical mile outside the reef off Cape Weymouth, and 33 miles from his final objective, the Australian mainland.
The rescue was a bitter blow ■ for the marathon rower, who was within striking distance of completing all of the 14,500 km voyage from San Francisco when he was plucked from the water.
