Zansark shows fitness at Motukarara trials

By

G. K. YULE

Zansark showed his fitness for the Norwich Winterthur Insurance Handicap at Richmond Park on Saturday when he was successful at the Motukarara trials yesterday. Zansark had too much in reserve for Shezahe over the final 150 m and won with something in hand by half a length after pacing the 2400 m in 3min 20.25, the last 800 m in Imin 2.15, and the final 400 m in 30.55. Zansark was an impressive graduate from maiden company at Ashburton on June 6, and he looks ready to extend his record at the Nelson meeting where he will again be driven by Michael de Filippi. Krazy Horse fought on steadily for third, ahead of My Idea and Fred Knight. Streets Ahead showed that he was ready to make a successful fresh start when he, won the main event on the programme in 3min 16.95, the last 800 m in Imin o.Bs, and the final 400 m in 29.95. Streets Ahead was always handy and ran on boldly to win by threequarters of a length from Buono Volata, which raced in the open arid did well to

beat Harvey’s Sister by half a length for second, with the Nelson candidate, Miss Dee Bee not far away fourth, followed by Scotty Del. Miss Dee Bee is owned in the Nelson district and is a stablemate of Zansark.

The Caltex Gold Cup candidate, Sika Dream, now trained by John Boyd, dropped out over the final stages after leading for a start. Sika Dream was a winner at the InterDominion Championship carnival at Alexandra Park.

Tina Lobell showed great speed after a tardy beginning to win the event for two-year-old pacers. She made up her lost ground early and led over the final 1000 m, careering away to win by 10 lengths and a half in 3min 8.3 s for the 2200 m, with the last 800 m in Imin 1.7 s and the final 400 m in 30.55.

Cararay went fairly for second, ahead of Gingo Kid and Castle Prince. < - Tina Lobell is unlikely to race again in New Zealand. Her owner-trainer, Kevin Ryder, has received several tempting offers for her from Australia. If negotianot completed in a

day or two he will send her to race in his interests in Australia. / Tina Lobell has shown marked improvement in recent weeks and she looks to have tremendous potential, especially in mobile start events.

Manuel and Darran John won the events for Cl pacers, but both were run at a slack pace. Darran John is a stablemate of Noble Rex and Margaret Dale, which raced attractively in their trials. Noble Rex was most impressive in winning his heat of the event for CO pacers. He led throughout and won most decisively from Queen Sparkle and Nookirk. Noble Rex is a form runner in the Globe Tavern Handicap, a race for junior horsemen at the Nelson meeting. He will be driven by John Denton. Brockworth Jack and Finigan That, which deadheated, Jasmine, Johnny Quest and Prime Minister were other maiden winners, Prime Minister ■ returning 28.8 s for his final 400 - Falcon Lord won the event for maiden trotters, beating Adios Anna, which showed ability after an early break- She is facing

taken north by Don Mcßae, of Invercargill, and will be accompanied by Big Beaut and Skipper Nordell, which did not obtain a start on the first day at Nelson even though he has won twice recently at trials. Double Deck provided a highlight of the day when he won the Pacers’ Sweepstake in 3min 14.45, the last 800 m in Imin 3s, and the final 400 m in 31.65. The son of Midshipman has thrived during a brief lay-off and looks ready to resume racing with a win at one of the Addington meetings next month.

He won by two lengths from Star Rule, with Star Sun and Miranta at the head of the others.

Mark Peter, Isley Boy, Tandace, Acrobat, Grand Step, and Sly Skipper all qualified over 2400 m, the fastest time of 3min 17s being returned by Tandace, a member of Colin Barnett’s team. Mark Smolensk! was suspended until after June 27 for causing interference to Valerie Module in an event for maiden pacers. Smolensk! was the driver of Black Budget, which finished with a damaged sulky wheel.
