Sailors ‘foolhardy’
PA Auckland The Auckland Coroner, Mr A. D. Copeland, has described as foolhardy the i' actions of two Swiss tourists who died in the Hauraki Gulf in December. The Coroner was speaking at an inquest into the deaths of Rudolf Bruno Bierderman, aged 33, and Peter Weibel, aged 30, both of Zurich. He found that the men died in the Hauraki Gulf, off Great Barrier Island, on December 13, death result-
ing from drowning by misadventure. The Coroner said that the men’s actions could only be described as foolhardy. They had been in New Zealand only a few months and neither had any boating or sailing experience. They had tried to take an open sailing dory to sea in strong winds and rough seas, against the advice of others. The men had no lifejackets, no other safety equipment, and only a stone for an anchor, the Coroner said.
