N.Z. just wins netball

NZPA-Reuter Singapore New Zealand scraped past Jamaica, 45-42, on the second day of the world netball tournament yesterday. New Zealand, the joint defending champion with Australia and Trinidad-Tobago, were clearly rattled by the unexpectedly strong Jamaican challenge. The shooters, Margharet Matenga and Margaret Forsyth, missed 39 out of 84 goal shots. Jamaica took full advantage of their 2m tall shooter, Patricia McDonald, who scored 32 goals. The New Zealand coach, Mrs Lois Muir, said after the match: “I wish we would have more games like today’s. We play weir under pressure.” England, regarded before the tournament as the dark horse who could give a good run for the cup, massacred Canada, 68-12, in their first match, having drawn a bye on the opening day. In other matches last evening (New Zealand time) Australia beat Wales, 58-26, Trini-dad-Tobago beat Scotland, 54-19, and Antigua beat Singapore, 53-22. New Zealand leads group A with four points ahead of Jamaica and England, which both have two. Australia and Trinidad-Tobago lead group B with four points.
