Match ends in uproar
NZPA Mexico City Three Dutch players were sent off as players and officials stormed the referee in an amazing finish to a world youth championship soccer quarter-final against Argentina yesterday. Argentina won the match, 2-1, with a goal in the second-last minute and the fracas began when referee, Keith Hackett, refused Dutch appeals for a penalty
almost on full-time. Players pushed and shouted at Mr Hackett as linesmen and officials ran to his assistance. It took nearly five minutes to restore order so the remaining 30 seconds of play could be completed. The Netherlands had scored in the fourth minute and controlled most of the match, but Argentina levelled 21 minutes into the second half and picked up
the winner through a deflection from a Dutch full-back when the ’keeper was committed to his dive. In the earlier quarterfinal, Brazil fought back after a shaky start to eliminate Czechoslovakia, 4-1. In tomorrow’s semi-finals Poland will play Argentina in Mexico City’s Azteca Stadium and South Korea will face Brazil at Monterrey.
