Relations with Australia

Sir,—Your feature on an Australian, Professor Blainey, urging closer ties between our two countries, will bring comfort and stimulation to many. He sees “two motives in a possible federation — economic and defence.” Surely there is a third: and it might be the most important — the motive of that family love which should bind all races of the human kind together. Particularly such as Australians and New Zealanders, who share so ,jpuch of a common heritage. The motive of “defence”

implies “fear.” The "economic” motive expresses a desire to improve our worldly standards — to get a bigger share of the cake: in other words “greed.” Now fear leads to hatred and greed to most of the social disorders that plague us today. Neither is any sound basis for a good and loving relationship. I spent eight happy years in Australia, working with British children for the Fairbridge Farm Schools and I have many friends and relations in that sun-kissed and gum-treed country.—Yours, etc., R. R. BEAUCHAMP. June 9, 1983.
