Action wanted on polluted river
PA Rotorua A top-level meeting held in Rotorua has called for strong action to clean up the polluted Tarawera River. Officials of the Water Re‘sources Council met a special committee of the Bay of Plenty Regional Water Board and the meeting decided on three recommendations for the river, which conservationists say is effectively dead. The joint meeting agreed that: • A public review of the Tarawera River be undertaken, with the object of preparing a water management plan. K • The Water Resources Council take the necessary
action to review the Tasman Pulp and Paper Company’s discharge conditions as a result of the recommendations of the water management plan. • The Government should be pressed for an immediate repeal of the water provisions of the Tasman Enabling Act, which gives the company special rights to discharge into the river. The recommendations will now go to both bodies for approval. The chairman of the Water Resources Council, Mr M. J. Conway, said that the Tarawera River was in a far from satisfactory condition.
