Test players rested
PA Greymouth The touring British Lions’ spell on the West Coast marks a period of rest and recuperation for the battle weary test team which lost the first international at Lancaster Park last Saturday. The team to meet second division West Coast tomorrow, announced by the manager, Willie John McBride, in Greymouth yesterday afternoon, includes only
two members of the defeated test side. The Welshman, Robert Ackerman, is retained in the centres, a possible reflection on his lacklustre performance on Saturday, while Roy Laidlaw — who will captain the Lions for the first time — is included as the Lions’ only fit half-back. The injury to the Welshman, Terry Holmes, which has forced his departure from the tour places a heavy burden on Laidlaw.
His replacement, the uncapped Englishman, Nigel Melville, will not join the team until tomorrow and until then Laidlaw must avoid personal injury.
The team is: Dusty Hare; John Carleton, Robert Ackerman, Clive Woodward, Gwyn Evans, John Rutherford; Roy Laidlaw (captain); John Beattie; Nick Jeavons, Steve Boyle, Steve Bainbridge, Jim Calder; Staff Jones, Colin Deans, lain Milne.
