Lady Sadie breaks national record

Lady Sadie broke the national record for 3200 m by a three-year-old trotter when she won the Longbeach Handicap at Ashburton yesterday. She returned 4min 19.55, beating the previous best of 4min 20.2 s held by Dragon’s Pride.

Lady Sadie, which had broken 4min 20s last Friday when second to Lord Zetland, had no difficulty winning yesterday. She was well back early while Falcon Lad and then Brockett Vale set a strong pace. Brian O’Carroll improved slowly with her and she was' handy turning for home. Lady Sadie, a filly by Boyden Hanover from Dream Mission, is owned by Mr I. N. and Mrs S. T. Scott. She was in command early in the run home and won untested by six lengths from Drizzle and Kapunda, which was three wide for the last

1500 m. Touch of Class, at odds of more than 60-to-l shaded the track record of 3min 8.2 s held by Bionic Adios by one-tenth of . a second when he upset calculations in the Autumn Handicap, first leg of the T.A.B. treble. He was leased three weeks ago by his trainer, Ross Payne, and two brothers, Terry and Michael.

Touch of Class shot clear about 250 m out and came away to win by three lengths from the firm favourite, Patron’s Parade, which was late working clear after being five back for much of the race. Memphis, Flying Folly and Justawink were close by at the head of the others.

Zansark, bought recently by Steve Christenson and his wife, followed up some consistent racing with a decisive all-the-way win over Darren Hanover in the Trial

Handicap, while Nardin’s Doll, a member of Robert Dunn’s team, won just as easily over Richina and Reggae in the Sherwood Handicap. Shy lock, which broke- on the first day of the meeting, proved too good for the favourite, Kawarau Chip, which made up many lengths in the run home in the RX Plastics Handicap. Shylock, a four-year-old, looks in for a most profitable 12 months.

Kawarau Chip, too, did well for second, ahead of Roy Hall, which shaded Most Likely Fella. Jet’s Sister became the only double winner at the meeting when she came strongly over the final 200 m of the Winter Handicap to win decisively from the pacemaker, Wary, and Hydro Light, with Skipper Dee right up fourth, ahead of Roydon Magic.
