In the New Zealand opener John Wright hammered his best Sunday League cricket score yesterday — just four days before he turns out against England in his country’s opening World Cup match.
Wright hit an exciting 108 in 98 minutes as Derbyshire scrambled past Warwickshire’s total of seven for 220 to grab victory with three balls remaining.
The talented left-hander knocked four sixes and eight fours on the way to his 88minute century and set up Derbyshire’s win in an opening stand of 113 with lain Anderson.
Wright was eventually trapped leg before by the England captain, Bob Willis,
but Geoff Miller hit an unbeaten 27 to carry Derbyshire to victory. Warwickshire struggled at the start but recovered from four for 69 thanks to Ugandan Asif Din’s determined 52 and an unbeaten 45 from Chris Old. The West Indian batsman, Gordon Greenidge, hit five sixes and five fours in a fierce assault on Yorkshire’s bowling, but failed to save Hampshire from defeat. Greenidge lashed 89 to help set Yorkshire a target of 256 runs — eight more than their best ever score. But a defiant stand between Jim Love and Neil Harley added 150 in 15 overs to secure a six-wicket win with seven balls remaining.
