Tait blames recession

The general world recession had prevented the Christchurch firm of Tait Electronics from increasing its exports to a level it had earlier predicted, said the managing director, Mr A. M. Tait, last evening. The lower than expected level of exports was the reason for the firm’s having to lay off 48 staff next month, he said. Seventeen had accepted voluntary redundancy. New Zealand sales of electronic goods made by Tait were at a record level last year and actual exports achieved were equal to the record year of 1981 when $7 million worth of goods were exported, Mr Tait said.
