The nasty intrusions

The Uninvited. By John Farris. Hodder and Stoughton, 1982. 260 pp. $24.75 (Reviewed by Ralf Unger) Mr John Farris, who wrote the successful book “The Fury,” has the haunting formula down to the last bit of sticky, revolting ectoplasm. The creation of a perfect man from the fantasy of a bereaved girl brings chaos to the household where the new being sucks up life energy. As pretty as a macho picture, his tissue is unfortunately not entirely erectile, and his motives utterly selfish and coldly destructive. A nearby elderly lady friend, who studied under the lamas, is eventually able to furnish the solution to the family to rid itself of their evil foundling. Quite typical of the current vogue of spirit-swarms, the book will titillate the twin foci of fear of the unknown in the night and sexual arousal, and is therefore bound to be a success as a diversion from the real world.
