Yellow submarine sold

NZPA-Reuter London The yellow submarine immortalised by the Beatles in song and on film was sold for £l4OO (SNZ22OO) at an auction in London. The one-man submarine would go on show at the site of the Cavern Club in Liverpool, northwest England, where the four musicians launched their career more than 20 years ago, said the buyers.

“We read it was for sale in the newspapers and thought it would be a good idea,” said Paul Mercer, who bought the submarine for the Royal Insurance Company, which is redeveloping the Cavern Club site. The craft, 3m long and designed to go down about 30m, was used to promote the Beatles’ film, “Yellow Submarine,” when it opened in 1968.

Christie’s Auction House said it was the first time it had sold a submarine. “It has been on display for a few days and has attracted a huge amount of interest,” a spokesman said. Arthur Johnson, a welder from Grimsby, north-east England, built the submarine in his garage. He planned to use the money from the sale to make a bigger craft, his wife told reporters.
