Aramoana to stay till late June

PA Blenheim The Cook Strait ferry Aramoana, brought out of mothballs on Tuesday, will be retained on the run between Wellington and Picton until late next month. The Aramoana was taken out of service in March, but was recalled to help clear the backlog of freight, cars, and passengers caused by the cancellation of three days sailings last week-end, because of bad weather.

The manager of the Railways Corporation’s air and sea services, Mr Brian Lundy, said yesterday that the corporation had decided to keep the vessel in service till about June 20. This would enable the ferries to continue their normal timetable from June 8 to 17, when the freight ferry Aratika is scheduled to leave the water for survey. Mr Lundy said the freight backlog caused by the cancellations ■ would probably be cleared by tomorrow.
