Wheat growers upset
Wellington reporter
Wheat growers are disappointed that they continue to be caught by the price, freeze for 1983, according to Federated Farmers. The freeze in the wheat price was most inappropriate, as wheat prices were set on the basis of world prices, and growers had to accept price falls as well as rises, said the chairman of the Federation’s wheat growers’ subsection (Mr A. L. Mulholland) and the chairman of the Federation’s Agriculture Section (Mr N. 0. Wright). However,. the Government’s decision that the old international pricing formula would operate in December and apply from March 1, 1984, did at least give growers some direction.
While wheat growers would benefit from a decrease in inflation, this had been offset by a number of Government instigated increases in input costs, including a tax on diesel, sales tax on spare parts, and tariffs on imported tractor tyres.
