Catchment Board reduces rates rise
The continuation of the wage freeze has encouraged the North Canterbury Catchment Board to cut its rates rise by 1 per cent to 26 per cent. Earlier this month, the board budgeted for a 3 per cent increase in wages when striking its new rates, but because of the continuation of the wage freeze it called a special rates meeting yes-
terday to reappraise the figure. The board’s chairman, Mr M. J. O. Dixon, said the board could remove the entire 3 per cent or cut it in half and leave some money in kitty for padding. The board decided on the latter course and has budgeted for a 1.5 per cent increase in wages.
