General forecast: A cool south-west flow covers the country and some light showers are expected about western coasts and the ranges of the North Island. Further showers in the south should become confined to the coasts, and there may be some showers on eastern coasts of both islands, but some lengthy fine periods as well. District forecasts: Canterbury: Mainly fine in the east with variable winds, although southwesterlies may freshen about the coast at times with a few showers; strong south-west winds about the high country with snow showers becoming isolated. Marlborough: Winds mainly south-west, though moderate inland and fine; winds fresh at times along the coast with a few light showers, but long fine periods.

Nelson: Fine and cool with overnight frosts; winds mainly south-westerly, fresh at times. Buller, Westland: Light, variable winds tending moderate south-westerly at times in Westland; fine and cool. Tomorrow: Mainly fine in all districts. Extended range forecast for the South Island for period Monday to Wednesday: On the West coast, unsettled with rain at times, the rain more persistent on Tuesday. Temperatures a little below normal. In Otago and Southland, dry at first but wet on Tuesday and Wednesday. Mild for a time about the middle of the period. In remaining South island districts, mainly dry but some rain on tuesday. Cold at first but becoming mild by Wednesday.
