Track should suit Auditory at Southland todav

Special correspondent Invercargill

Auditory, in the twilight of her distinguished racing career, should prove a worthy top weight in the Countdown Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double, at the Southland Racing Club's meeting today. The talented Wingatui mare, fourth in the Trentham Stakes in January, was inconvenienced by the puggy footing when sixth over 1600 m at the Winton meeting on the Invercargill course last Monday. That distance was a shade short of her best and rain in the interim which has made the track looser and deeper should suit her better. Jim Collett, the South Island’s top jockey, will handle her. Their rewarding association will be foremost in the minds of many when assessing prospects for the 2150 m contest.

Imperial Helen, one of the star graduates to open ranks this autumn, made an almost immediate impression in the higher grade when she led over the last 1400 m of last Monday’s 1600 m test at the Winton meeting. She is equally as well suited when ridden in behind and Bruce Smith will probably opt for those tactics on this occasion. Favouritism for the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Animal Remedies Handicap, will be disputed by The Fluter and The Vision, two of the deep south’s most established sprinters.

Jackpot fever is sweeping Southland in epidemic proportions. A pool certain to climb well over $lOO,OOO has to terminate at this meeting. It stands at $55,000. A Christchurch syndicate has announced its intention to invest $20,000 in the “pot” and a Wellington syndicate has intimated a similar intention. T.A.B.
