D.S.I.R. post for Chch man

A Christchurch-born, internationally recognised landscape planner, has been appointed to the Biological Resources Centre of the D.S.I.R. Dr Tony Jackman has been employed on contract to help develop a national landscape inventory after spending three years overseas studying landscape planning techniques. The project will use computer techniques to identify outstanding New Zealand landscapes that should be preserved for their environmental or tourist potential. In announcing the new appointment, the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Shearer, said that the position reflected the increasing awareness of the unique qualities of New Zealand landscapes. Dr Jackman completed a post-graduate diploma in landscape architecture in 1970 and then served both as consultant and senior lecturer at Lincoln College. He was founding chairman and president of the Institute of Landscape Architects before entering private practice. Many of Dr Jackman’s

landscape plans and designs have been adopted in New Zealand, the Middle East, and the South Pacific. The Biological Resources Centre was established by Dr Shearer in 1981 to collect and distribute biological information directly relevant to future development in New Zealand.
