Hunt for subs stepped up
NZPA-Reuter Sundsvall The Swedish Navy yesterday intensified a week-old hunt for foreign submarines off the northern port of Sundsvall, although it was unclear whether detonated underwater mines had damaged one of the intruders. Ships from the south of Sweden joined naval vessels and helicopters already engaged in the search. Local hospitals went on stand-by to take any injured
crewmen who might be brought up, but it was not known whether any salvage or rescue operation had actually begun. Naval and Defence Staff spokesmen declined to say whether divers had gone down to search for the vessel as expected. They said only that analyses would be made while the hunt continued. A clear picture could take a long time to emerge, they said.
