Final country calf sale
Most steer calves sold between $l2O and $lBO at the second Cheviot calf sale yesterday, which was the final country sale of calves in North Canterbury this season. Although prices were much better than the corresponding sale last year, when the beef industry was depressed, yesterday’s sale lacked the buoyancy of other sales this season. The yarding of 256 steer calves and 255 heifers was less than half the total number of 1119 offered last year. Only a small gallery of buyers was present and most of the buying power was provided by local farmers. The bulk of the yarding comprised tussock calves. Heifers were harder to sell than steers, particularly Hereford heifers, and several pens were passed in. Most heifers sold from $lOO to $l4O, with small calves down to $6O. D. A. and T. D. Anderson, of Kalimera, had a consistent
sale, receiving $l7O for a pen of Angus-Hereford cross steers and $164 for Angus steers. Costello Farm, of Spring Terrace, sold two pens of AngusHereford cross steers at $lB6 and $lB2, while the top price of $l9O was recorded by R. E. and L. A.
